mammography

When should I have a mammogram?

If you are a woman aged 40 and over, you should have a screening mammogram every year to check for abnormalities that may indicate early stages of breast cancer. If you are having problems, you may require a diagnostic mammogram and will need a doctor’s referral. If you have a strong family history of breast cancer, your doctor may recommend you start screening mammograms at an earlier age. In some cases, mammograms can detect cancerous lesions earlier than you can feel them with a self-exam.

Can a mammogram find all breast cancers?

Unfortunately not. Although mammography is currently the most effective method of detecting breast cancer, a diagnosed “normal” mammogram does not guarantee the total absence of cancer. Because lumps or breast cancers may be identified in several different ways, it’s important to perform regular self-examinations, have a breast examination by your regular physician, and also have a mammogram. The combination of all these exams will further increase your chance for early detection.

What to know about
a mammogram appointment?

It will take 10 to 15 minutes to acquire the images with your compression lasting only a few seconds per view. It’s best not to wear deodorant or powder during your exam. Wear a two-piece outfit so you can undress from waist up only. Schedule your mammogram shortly after your period to minimize any discomfort.
